Masses, of this kind are subject to various restrictions. They cannot be celebrated unless on days of minor rite, nor without a reasonable cause; for the rubrics of the Missal are very explicit in saying that, as far as can be done, the Mass ought to agree with the office of the day. St. Liguori says that a Votive Mass cannot be said merely on the plea that it is shorter than the Mass of the day, but that a more serious reason is required (Book vi., No. 419).
